urban sections and very heavy density routes where the trains have to follow in quick succession On approaching the station in rear LP shall stop the train at the foot of the home signal in the case of Single Line and opposite to the Semiautomatic/manual signal of the other line in case of Double Line.
<!-- Slide number: 1 --> AUTOMATIC BLOCK SYSTEM <!-- Slide number: 2 --> # AUTOMATIC BLOCK SYSTEM Salient Features- It is the second widely adopted system on Indian Railways. It is followed mostly on the sub-urban sections and very heavy density routes where the trains have to follow in quick succession. The line is provided with continuous track circuiting or axle counters. The signals are of multiple aspect colour light nature displaying three or more aspects. <!-- Slide number: 3 --> Provision of four aspect automatic signalling with inter-signal distance of 800 metres will improve the line capacity from the present 2.2 to 2.4 trains per hour to approximately 5 to 10 trains per hour. This becomes possible as each block section will permit a large no:of trains following each other and the operational time for the signalling equipment at stations is reduced to the barest minimum. <!-- Slide number: 4 --> Sections of South Western Railway where Double Line Automatic Block System is in force.(S.R. 9.01(i)) SBC to WFD <!-- Slide number: 5 --> Essentials of Automatic Block System –Double Line ( Rule 9.01) Line shall be provided with continuous track circuiting or axle counters. Line between adjacent block stations may, when required be divided into signalling sections by provision of Automatic Stop Signals. Entry of train into each signalling section is controlled by a stop signal. <!-- Slide number: 6 --> 4. The Signal shall not assume “OFF” aspect unless the line is clear up to the next Automatic Stop Signal plus an adequate distance. 5. The Signal shall assume “ON” aspect automatically as soon as the train passes it. 6. Unless relaxation is given by CRS the adequate distance mentioned above shall not be less than 120 metres. <!-- Slide number: 7 --> # Essentials of Automatic Block System - Single Line (Rule 9.03) The Line shall be provided with continuous track circuiting or axle counters. The Direction of traffic shall be established only after the Line clear has been obtained from the block station in advance. A train shall be started from one block station to another only after the direction of traffic has been established. <!-- Slide number: 8 --> 4. It shall not be possible to obtain Line clear from the station in advance unless the line is clear up to the FSS plus an adequate distance beyond it. 5. The line between two adjacent block stations may be divided into two or more Automatic block signalling sections by provision of Stop Signals. 6. After the direction of traffic has been established movement of trains into, through and out of each signalling section shall be controlled by the concerned Automatic stop signal. <!-- Slide number: 9 --> 7. The said signal shall not assume “OFF” aspect unless the line is clear up to the next Automatic stop signal. 8. But if the next stop signal is a manually controlled one the line must be clear up to the manual signal plus an adequate distance. 9. All signals against the direction of traffic shall be kept at “ON”. 10 Unless relaxation is given by CRS the adequate distance mentioned above shall not be less than 180 metres. <!-- Slide number: 10 --> # Issue of Competency Certificate to LPs/Motormen and Guards working in Automatic Block System ( S.R. 9.14(ii)) LPs/ALPs/Motormen and Guards working in the Automatic block system shall undergo an Orientation Course on Automatic block system. They shall be thoroughly examined in the knowledge of rules for working of trains in the Automatic block system and thereupon be issued with the Competency Certificate by the Training Centre. <!-- Slide number: 11 --> When the original Competency Certificate is lost Principal ZTC/TPJ or Director STC shall issue a duplicate Competency Certificate. However in the meanwhile Operations Officer of the Division is authorised to issue a provisional Competency Certificate after satisfying himself about the Competency of the individual. This Certificate is valid for 10 days <!-- Sl
