# WORKING OF TRAINS Generally (Chapter IV)Compiled By : - S Velraj, Inst/Optg, MDZTI, DWR, SWR

<!-- Slide number: 2 -->

<!-- Slide number: 3 -->

Maximum Permissible Speed   (MPS)

Prescribed by CRS for each section and Loco separately.
Fixed on the basis of -
Strength of track, Type of Engine, Gradient in the section
Indicated in WTT at relevant page for each section.

<!-- Slide number: 4 -->

LP not TO exceed this speed even if he is running late.
On basis of this speed, Minimum Permissible Running Time calculated.
If MPS of the Loco & MPS of section are different then whichever lower is MPS.

<!-- Slide number: 5 -->

Booked Speed
Fixed by PCOM (Principal Chief Operation Manager) according to the importance of trains.
Now it got no relevance as all trains are to run with MPS as instructed by Railway Board
It is 8 to12% less than maximum permissible speed.

<!-- Slide number: 6 -->

Minimum Permissible Running Time  (MPRT)
 This is the running time between stations when running at MPS prescribed.
This is calculated taking into account the running time, Time for acceleration/deceleration, gradients, load of the train stoppage platform time loop line or main line and includes time loss on account of Permanent Speed Restrictions.
The difference between this time and the booked time of section gives time made up by LP at BS.

Speed over facing points
Speed over facing points will be shown in WTT.
It depends on the standard of interlocking.
Speed over facing points during signal failure is 15 kmph
Speed over all crossovers and turnouts are 30 kmph or lesser speed as specified and higher speed permitted under approved special instructions.

<!-- Slide number: 8 -->

# GR/SR 4.10
Limits of speed over facing points
The speed of trains over NI facing points shall not exceed 30 KMPH.
The speed over turnouts and crossovers shall not exceed its permissible speed or 30 KMPH whichever is less, unless otherwise prescribed by approved spl inst, which may be permit a higher speed (C.M. 67).
A train may run over interlocked facing point at such speed as may be permitted by the standard of interlocking.

<!-- Slide number: 9 -->

# S.R. 4.10
The speed over turnouts having 1 in 8 ½ straight switch would be restricted to 10 KMPH.
When 1 in 8 ½ curved switches are provided , the maximum speed permissible over the turnout should be 15 KMPH.

<!-- Slide number: 10 -->

# Speed during NI Working (GR 4.10)
Speed of trains during Non-Interlocked working is 30 KMPH.
While approving the GR amendment, precautions were stipulated and approved by RB & CRS.
Zonal railways to issue necessary instructions as brought out to take appropriate precaution.
Ref:-RB letter No.2020/Safety/(A&R)/19/07 dated 18/03/20
Our Railway is yet to issue letter in this aspect.

<!-- Slide number: 11 -->

# Precautions for 30 KMPH during NI working

Clamping and padlocking of points by using suitable clamps.
No separate temporary panel needed, and only free home signal shall be given.
Integrity of point shall be checked by operating staff.
Detecting of facing point shall be proved in the concerned signal by suitable circuit wiring.
Physical verification of track shall be done by SM.
Necessary directions be incorporated in TWI for 30 KMPH with suitable infrastructure support as deemed necessary.

<!-- Slide number: 12 -->

# G.R. 4.11

Limits of speed while running through stations
No train shall run through an interlocked station at a speed exceeding 50 KMPH, unless the line on which the train is to run isolated from all other lines.
When a train permitted to run through on a non isolated line, all shunting shall be stopped.
No vehicle unattached to an engine or not properly secured as per rule 5.23 may be kept standing on a connected line which is not isolated from the through line.
