In the past, a number of instructions have been issued on the criteria on declaration of trains as superfast, amount of superfast surcharge, when it is to be levied, etc. (.) The instructions issued in the past on the above subject have been compiled and a copy of the same is enclosed with post copy (.) This may be advised to all concerned (.) Appearing i~trule 242.(vi) may be deleted, i ~1\ "I, - ~2.- , ,: Superfast trains and $urcharge ; I I I I I (1) For. declaring Mail/Express trains as superfast trains for the purpose of levy of supplementary charge (i.e. superfast surcharge), only the average speed of the trains train is taken into consideration. For this purpose, the average speed of the train will be 55 kmph or more for Broad Gauge trains and 45 kmph or more for Metre Gauge trains. The average speed is calculated by dividing the ehd-tq-end distance by the total journey time. The average speed criteria needs to be satisfied in both up and down directions for a particular pair of train. Zonal Railways themselves declare the train as superfast when it fulfils the requisite speed criteria. As an exception, Howrah-Kalka Mail has been , categorised as alSuperfast train for travel between Delhi & Howrah only. , (i): The rate of superfast surcharge, effective from ~\0.6.1 998, is ~ ..... :- (2) as under: I .;; (ii): The charges for Monthly & Quarterly superfast surcharge tickets (for season ticket holders), as revised from15.2.06, are as under: ' (3) Superfast surcharge is levied on all passengers, irrespective of distance, separately for each journey. On tickets involving more than one journey, i.e. where break journey is involved and circular journey tickets, superfast surcharge will be levied only once (and not separately for each leg of journey).
