# ACCIDENT DEFINITION.
Any occurrence which does or may affect the safety of the Railways, its engines, rolling stock, permanent way, works, passengers or Railway servants,
Or which affects the safety of others,
Or which does or may cause delays to trains
Or loss to the Railway is termed as accident

For the purpose of statistics Classified in to classes ‘A’ to ‘R’
except
 Classes ‘I’ and ‘O’.

B:     FIRE IN TRAINS.
C:     L.C. GATE ACCIDENTS.
D:     DERAILMENTS.
E:     OTHER TRAIN ACCIDENTS. ( TRAIN RUNNING 		OVER / AGAINST ANY OBSTRUCTIONS)

Kunzru Committee classified accidents in to two main heads:
(a) Consequential accidents
(b) Indicative accidents

At present, Accidents are classified into five heads:
Train Accidents
Yard Accidents
Indicative Accidents
Equipment failure
Unusual incidents

Train Accident:
Further classified in to two:
Consequential train accidents
Other train accidents

Consequential train accidents:
They include the following classes:
 A-1  	to  	A-4
 B-1 	to  	B-4
 C-1 	to  	C-4
 D-1 	to  	D-4
 E-1

Other train accidents:
All other train accidents, which are not covered under Consequential accidents.
They include the following classes:
Class B-5, B-6, C-5 to C-8, D-5 and E-2

Indicative Accidents:
Mishaps, generally not resulting in casualties, but which are indicative of unsafe acts or unsafe condition or work and potential hazards.
They include the following classes.
CLASS -  F, G & H

AVERTED COLLISION:
To consider an incident as “Averted Collision”-
Outside station limits, the distance between the two trains or the train and the obstruction when the train or the trains have finally come to a stop must be LESS THAN 400 meters.
Within station limits, there must be no intervening stop signal at danger governing the moving train.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT:
Accident to a train carrying passengers which is attended with -
loss of life or
grievous hurt to  passengers in the train or
damage to railway property of the value exceeding Rs. 2 Crores
any other accident, which, in the opinion of CRS or CCRS requires holding of enquiry by CRS.

GRIEVOUS HURT
The injuries defined in Section 320 of I.P.C.
THRESHOLD VALUE:
The minimum value beyond which the accident will be treated as having serious repercussion.
Threshold value of Railway property loss is fixed as Rs. One Lakh.
