FOREWORD I am happy that a New Edition of General & Subsidiary Rules -2020 (G&SR) has been published by Central Railway. The General & Subsidiary Rule is the most important book containing various provisions for train working on Indian Railways. Since last publication in 1999, there have been many changes in the G&S Rules. It is a matter of pride that all the changes have been incorporated, various redundant provisions have been deleted and certain new provisions have been added. It was essential with the changes in technology and the system of working. The printing of this G&SR 2020 in diglot form will be very convenient for Railway Officers and Staff to easily comprehend the ethos of the various rules. t is expected that all the Railwaymen will be highly benefited by reading this book. It is also a matter of pride that G&SR of Central Railway have always been a model for other railways to emulate. This position of pride was once again established by this publication. Taking up this massive work required vision, direction and dedication of the Operating team of CR. The result out of their hard work is obviously commendable. PREFACE A New Edition of the General and Subsidiary Rules of Central Railway has been published after a gap of two decades. During last 20 years the Indian Railways has grown enormously. The number of trains has increased and traffic movement has galloped. New technologies have been adopted and systems of working have undergone changes. It is imperative that Rules, regulations and practices keep pace with such a changing scenario. The need of publishing New Edition also became pressing due to amendments made in 362 rules by means of 22 correction slips appended to G & SR. It was difficult and cumbersome to understand and assimilate various provisions in entirety due to correction slips kept as annexures. This New Edition of G & SR is historic in many ways incorporating various corrections slips, deleting many redundant rules, adding important provisions, etc. Utmost care was needed to ensure accuracy. It was indeed a seemingly impossible herculean task! Work demanded great dedication and motivation. Taking care of ambiguity is proof of any sound law, where every word, sentence, syntax should aim at giving clarity to the reader especially Railwaymen involved in safe and efficient operations. It is a matter of great pride that with the publication of this Revised Rule Book, Central Railway has added another feather in its cap. For ease of understanding of Railwaymen, it was essential to print in diglot form, giving facility ofreferring page by page and sentence by sentence. Printing this G & SR- 2020 in diglot format posed another challenge as number of pages were getting doubled. Thus, options were examined to have an attractive handy book with best quality paper and printing. I am happy to note that this publication has come out as desired. The usefulness of any such statutory book is when employees read and refer it often. They not only understand but imbibe and incorporate the provisions in their daily work life.
