Sub: Categorization of railway stations
The categorization of railway stations is done every five years. The revision of
categorisation of stations for the year 2024-25 is due and the same is based on the similar
criteria as done in the year 2017-18 i.e passenger earnings (PRS + UTS) and number of
outward passengers handled at railway station for the year 2023-24.
Based on the data received from all zonal railways and Metro Railway, the total
number of stations opened for passenger traffic works out as 8809.
The Railway-wise and Category-wise segregation of Railway stations in different
categories as per the criteria adopted has been done based on the data furnished by Zonal
Railways for the financial year 2023-24 and the same is enclosed as Annexure A. In
supersession of all earlier instructions on the captioned subject, the enclosed annexure are
issued for compliance.
