Summary

When SM of a beat station on a beat section, on receiving a report of any danger shall stop all traffic on section & shall not allow any train until he receives an authority for doing so, in writing either from the Gangmate or PWI.

General terms used in patrolling
Beat section:-  For the purpose of patrol, line to be patrolled divided into “Beat Section”.
A beat section is length between 2 block stations so selected, distance from one to another divisible into  beats of required length.
Beat Stations:- Block stations selected for defining beat section called “Beat Station”.
Beat :- The length of track, where a patrolman does patrolling TO and FRO. A beat section may comprise of one or more beats. Normally beat length shall not exceed 5 KMs but this may be relaxed on other conditions like intensity of rail fall and train service etc

Patrol :- When a patrolman walked the length of his beat once out and returned to point from where he started, he has completed a patrol.
Patrol charts:- Patrolmen  patrol their beats according to patrol charts issued by DEN. Copies given to running shed, control office and station concerned.
Beat Books:- Movements of patrolmen regulated by means of beat books. Required number of beat books maintained by SM at beat stations indicated in patrol diagram for that station.

Patrol diagram:-
Every year during monsoon patrolling, before one month, DEN ensure PWI in possession of night patrol diagrams for his section.
Beat stations indicated in patrol diagram.
Time of duty of patrolmen specified in patrol diagram.

Normally one patrolman deputed for each beat.
Two patrolmen deputed for jungle and ghat.
Each beat section patrolled twice during night.
Beat length not to exceed five kms.
When one patrolman nominated for a beat, he should be a permanent man.
When there are in pairs, the second man may be an experienced casual labour who is properly tested in rules by PWI and medically fit.

A Patrolman shall not walk more than 20 KMs.
For beats up to 5 kms in length, 2 patrols will be performed by same patrolman.
A period of at least half an hour’s rest desirable between  consecutive beats.
Interval between 2 consecutive patrols of a beat shall normally about 3 hrs, may be increased to 4 hrs where train services light & monsoon conditions are not severe.
A beat section may comprise one or more beats.

The interval between two consecutive patrols of a beat shall normally be about three hours.

The speed at which a patrolman walks while inspecting the line shall not exceed 3 KMPH.

Monsoon Patrolling
During monsoons and stormy weather, special arrangements made to patrol line during night.
Based on Forecast of Met Dept, reports of highway and irrigation departs, DEN introduce Night Patrolling.
SMs throughout Section advised.
If no Night Train Service, Keyman patrol over his length before 1st Train of the Day.

Emergency Patrolling:-
Put on for a particular length, If there is Abnormal Rainfall or Storm.
Introduced for Day & Night by DEN/AEN/JE/SE/PWay/Gangmate.
Taken off by ADEN, if satisfied of total cessation of adverse conditions.
If there is sudden Cloud Burst, Emergency Patrolling shall be introduced in
Deep cuttings, where boulders likely to roll down.
Bridges prone for Floods.
When introduced, SMs issue Caution Orders for Trains.

Security Patrolling:-
On apprehension of Civil Disturbance or due to any other cause, DEN shall on receipt of advice, introduce Security Patrolling.
The Beat Length in Security Patrolling may be shorter than that of Monsoon Patrolling.
