With a view to simplify the abbreviations of existing passenger 
coaches and to take care of different types of composite coaches proposed 
to be introduced in near future, the entire issue of giving abbreviations to 
different type of coaches was examined in this office in consultation with 
Mechanical Coaching and Telecommunication Directorates and it has 
been decided that the following abbreviations may be used for different 
type of passenger coaches:-

For making composite coach the abbreviation can be combined for 
example: - 
 
1st AC cum 2nd AC

HB etc. 
 
 
Necessary changes may be made in the software, number of plates 
displayed outside the coaches, coach guidance Board and wherever else 
required. The abbreviations may be implemented from 01.07.2007. 
Necessary instructions may be issued to all concerned. Wide publicity 
may be given through all available media for information of general 
public.
