# WORKING OF EMU/DEMU/MEMU

# EMU
Multiple unit train consisting of self-propelled carriages using AC traction.
Quieter than DMUs and loco hauled trains.
Requires no separate loco, as AC Traction motors incorporated within one or a number of the carriages.
Popular on commuter and suburban rail networks.
Faster acceleration and pollution & noise free operation.

# EMU
One unit consists of 3 coaches.
One motor coach and 2 non motor coaches among the 3.
These are multiplied as 3 or 4 making it a 9/12 coach train as generally mentioned in the front of the train.

# Difference between EMU & MEMU
EMU is Electrical Multiple Unit
Runs in the suburban sections of major cities.
MEMU is Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit
Runs on mainline generally for distances more than the suburban sections.
MEMU runs on the same line on which normal Local/Exp/Mail/SF trains run.

# EMU
In EMU one power car is required for 3 coaches.
An EMU 12 coaches in length will have 4 power cars.
Whereas MEMU one power car is needed for 4 coaches.
Generally, MEMU’s are normally 16 or 20 coaches whereas EMU’s generally of 12 coaches.
EMU & MEMU both run on AC traction.
DEMU runs on diesel traction

Primary source is diesel.
Diesel engine powers an alternator and subsequently feeds the electric motors.
Just differ in how they are powered externally with MEMU.

LP of EMU/DEMU permitted to leave engine to speak to SM over SPT in IBP.

While doing so, he apply brakes and extract brake isolation valve key (BIV), Reserve key and bench lock key duly advising guard to be available in cab, apply brakes and place wedges to wheels if required.
