SPECIAL FEATURES OF RAILWAYS 
A. TRACK BOUND 
1. Train is track bound, it can move only along a fixed path made for it. 
2. Trains can cross or precede only at Stations with loop lines. 
3. LP can accelerate, decelerate, start and stop the Train on the line which is set for him. 
B. BRAKING DISTANCE 
1. Braking distance means the distance required for any vehicles to stop after applying 
brakes. 
2. It is directly proportional to load and speed. 
3. It is more for Trains because of its lengthy formation, carrying load and high speed. 
C. RIGHT OF PATH 
1. Railway has its own right of path 
2. No road vehicle can come on its path except at places like level crossings 
DEFINITIONS 
1. Station means any place on a line of railway at which traffic is dealt with, or at 
which an authority to proceed is given under the system of working;  
2. Authority to proceed means the authority given to the Loco Pilot of a train, under 
the system of working, to enter the block section with his train;  
TYPES OF ATPs 
Tangible ATP- ATP obtained from Token Block Instrument. 
Visible ATP- ATP obtained from Tokenless Block Instrument/Track circuits/Axle 
counters. 
Written ATP- Issued during failure of Block Instrument/ Track Circuits/Axle counter& 
abnormal circumstances. 
3. Connections when used with reference to a running line, means the points and 
crossings or other appliances used to connect such line with other lines or to cross it;  
4. Competent Railway Servant means a Railway Servant duly qualified to undertake 
and perform the duties entrusted to him. 
5. Fixed signal means a signal of fixed location indicating a condition affecting the 
movement of a train and includes a semaphore arm or disc or fixed light for use by 
day and fixed light for use by night;

6. First stop signal means the fixed stop Signal of a Station controlling the entry of 
Trains into the Station section;  
7. Station Master means the person on duty who is for the time being responsible for 
the working of the traffic within station limits, and includes any person who is for 
the time being in independent charge of the working of any signals and responsible 
for the working of trains under the system of working in force;
