Introduction of Family Cabins in A.C 2 Tier, A.C 3 Tier & Sleeper coaches
Indian Railways carried 3,944 million non-suburban passengers during the year
2012-13. Indian Railways continue to introduce more number of trains due to heavy
demand, which also increase the productivity of available route km, employees and all
other infrastructure.
Existing A.C-2 tier, A.C-3 Tier & Sleeper coaches provide different level of
comfort & amenities which were developed over the years to serve the passenger
needs well. One of the improvements that will attract the passengers is provision of
cabins in the existing A.C-2 tier, A.C-3 Tier & Sleeper coaches. Many passengers of
Indian Railways of all classes are ready to pay more if they were provided with cabins
which will improve their privacy during their travel. At present only A.C First class &
First Class coaches are providing privacy to the passengers who are travelling with
family or in small groups.
Indian Railways can extend the facility of cabins in existing A.C-2 tier, A.C-3 Tier
& Sleeper coaches without any change in coach layout by providing light weight
aluminium doors in two bays of these coaches. Berths of these cabins of A.C-2 tier,
A.C-3 Tier & Sleeper coaches can be charged additionally
20%, 15% & 10%
respectively.
By providing cabins as suggested above Indian Railways can earn

additional Rs.523.55 crore annually as per the projected passenger
traffic of Working Group report for XII Plan – Railway Sector statistics
for the year 2015-16 & including 14.2% fare increase or atleast
