SIGNALS
Signals are communications used to convey a definite meaning.
Example:Traffic signals on the road.

Sign language,flags, …
In Railways signals are used to give information such as
Gate is closed
Block section is clear
Permission to enter into the station
Permission to leave the station, etc.

SIGNALS
In Railways signals are used to control the movement of trains.
Signals are of 4 kinds.

They are:
	1. Fixed signals
		2. Hand signals
			3. Detonators
				4. Warning Signals

 GR  1.02 (22) “fixed signal” means a signal of fixed location indicating a condition affecting the movement of a train and includes a semaphore arm or disc or fixed light for use by day and fixed light for use by night

Fixed Signal – General description
The location of the signal is fixed and clearly visible to Loco Pilots .
Placed immediately to the left of or above the line to which it refers.
Under special instructions, may be placed to the right of the line also.

May be Semaphore arm or Colour light.
The signals used by night shall also be used by day in tunnels or during thick or foggy weather.
The most restrictive aspect of a signal is “ON” position.
Any prescribed aspect other than “ON” aspect is “OFF” position.

ASPECT OF A SIGNAL
‘Aspect’ means the appearance of the signal as seen by the Loco Pilot of an approaching train, which is colour of light

However, the aspects are called out as Stop, Caution, Attention and Proceed.
INDICATION OF A SIGNAL
‘Indication’ means the information or meaning, conveyed by the aspect of the signal.

Fixed signals shall be brought in to use
   only after they have been passed by CRS
   as sufficient for safe working of trains.

ON ASPECT
A fixed signal is said to be at ‘ON’ when it shows its most restrictive aspect.
OFF ASPECT
A fixed signal is said to be at ‘OFF’ when it shows any prescribed aspect other than ‘ON’ aspect.

IN REAR OF A SIGNAL
The Loco Pilot of a train is said to be in rear of the signal, as long as he has not passed the signal.
any position on that portion of the line leading up to the signal, in the direction to which the signal refers to the line.
