# 1.History of  Indian Railways
The history of Indian Railways in India dates back in 1853
On  16th April 1853, the 1st Passenger train in India had ran between Bori Bunder (Mumbai CST) and Thane.
Total distance covered by the first passenger train in India was: 34 Km.

The 1st train consists of 14 carriages, carried around 400 guests.
It was pulled by 3 Steam Locomotive engines namely Sahib, Sindh and Sultan

# History of  Indian Railways.  Cont..
In 1854 a passenger train steamed out from Howrah to Hooghly.
In South India: The first train had ran on 1st July, 1856 from Vyasarpadi Jeeva Nilayam (Veysarpandy) to  Walaja Road (Arcot) by Madras  Railway Company.

# 2. Development of Indian Railways
On 18th Feb. 1905 Railway Board constituted in New Delhi.

In 1951 Indian Railways was nationalized.
In 1952, the Indian Railways was reorganized into variou Zones. Zonal Railway System has been introduced.

# As on 31st March, 2022 total route length km: 68,043 Km.
At present there are 17 Zonal Railways.
The proposed 18th Railway Zone: South Coast Railway Zone, HQ.VSKP
All Zone are divided into Divisional Railways.

# Brief about South Western Railway  (SWR)

South Western Railway has been operational from 1st April 2003 with headquarters at Hubballi in state of Karnataka. SWR covers states of Karnataka (84%) predominantly and parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Maharashtra.
