Sub: Revision of Passenger Fares – Railway Budget 2008-09. 
 
As announced by Honourable   Minister of Railways in the Budget Speech 
while presenting the Railway Budget for the year 2008-09, it has been decided to 
make following changes in passenger fares. 
 
2. 
 Variable Fare Scheme:  
 
2.1       Second Class: 
 
(i)   Non-Suburban: The existing basic fares up to Rs. 50/- per passenger 
for Non-suburban Mail/Express including Superfast trains and Non-suburban  
Ordinary Passenger Trains shall be reduced by giving a discount of Re. 1/-.  
Fares beyond Rs. 50/- per passenger shall be reduced by giving a discount of 
5%.      
 
 
(ii)    Suburban: 
There will be no change in the existing fares for travel 
in Suburban Sections. 
 
2.2. Upper Class : 
 
(i) AC First Class:  It has been decided to reduce the existing fares of AC 
First Class by approximately 7% during Lean season and by approximately 3.5% 
during Peak season.  However, reduction in fares for popular trains shall be 
approximately 3.5%  for all seasons. 
 
(ii)  AC 2-Tier Class:  It has been decided to reduce the existing fares of 
AC 2-Tier by approximately 4% during Lean season and by approximately 2% 
during Peak season. However, reduction in fares for popular trains shall be 
approximately 2% for all seasons.

2.3 (i) Fares for High Capacity Coaches: It has been decided to grant discounts in fares in 
High Capacity Coaches as mentioned below.

(ii) These discounts should be granted in the fares published in the IRCA 
Coaching Tariff  No. 26 (Part II) while charging the fares for High Capacity 
Coaches. 
 
4. 
Peak Season and Lean Season for the purpose of charging of fares under 
Variable Fare Scheme shall be as under: 
 
Peak Season       1st April              to     31st July and   
                             1st September    to     31st January 
Lean Season      1st February        to     31st March and 
                            1st August           to     31st  August 
 
5.       Coaching Tariff No. 26 (Part II):  
 
5.1 Revised passenger fares effective from 1st April, 2008 have been published 
for Second Class (Ordy.) for Suburban and Non-Suburban, Second Class 
(Mail/Express) for Suburban, Superfast Trains and other than Superfast Trains, 
Sleeper Class, First Class, A.C. Chair Car, A.C. 3-Tier, A.C. 2-Tier for Peak 
Season and Lean Season, AC First Class for Peak Season and Lean Season in 
the IRCA Coaching Tariff No. 26 (Part II).   
 
5.2   Basic Passenger fares for Shatabdi Express Trains, Jan Shatabdi Express 
Trains, Garib Rath Express Trains, Rajdhani Express Trains (Peak and Lean 
Seasons)  and Season Tickets have also been published in the IRCA Coaching 
Tariff No. 26 (Part II). 
 
5.3   It may be noted that Passenger fares have been published in IRCA 
Coaching Tariff No. 26 (Part II) after granting discounts as given in para 2.1 and 
2.2 above. However, discounts as given in para 2.3 (i) shall be granted on the 
fares published in the IRCA Coaching Tariff No 26 (Part II) while charging fares 
for High Capacity Coaches

 List of Popular Trains:  Popular trains will be as notified separately from 
time to time.  
 
7. 
These instructions will be applicable with effect from 1st April, 2008. 
 
8. 
The above changes will come into effect for journeys commencing on and 
after 1.4.2008:  The revised fares will also apply to tickets issued in advance.
