Children are generally associated with innocence, freedom, joy etc. without the bindings of adult life
Children are highly vulnerable to various forms of exploitation, abuse and crime and need to be protected from the cruelty of the outside world
A child's protection/up brining lies with the parents?
Children represent the nation’s future generation – Central/State/local government  is obligated to protect and safeguard their rights, we invest in the well-being and development of the next generation
Hence robust legal frameworks to safeguard children’s rights and promote their overall development is a need of the hour.
Protecting children’s rights ensures that they have the necessary support and opportunities to not only reach their own potential to the maximum but also  contributes for the overall progress of society
India has a wide range of laws to protect children and child protection is increasingly accepted as a core component of social development
The challenge is in implementing the laws due to inadequate human resource capacity on ground & equality prevention and rehabilitation services
Ensuring India's children are sufficiently protected, requires more than the existing investment, focused on post-incident responses
UNICEF India works with the government to provide well-established family-based alternative care options for children without parental care

Definition of Child under enactments prevalent in India for the protection of Children and their
 objective
The Child Labour (Protection and Regulation) Act, 1986

‘Child’ means a person who has not completed his fourteenth year of age

This Act aims at prohibiting the engagement of children below the age of 14 years in specified occupations and processes

The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006

‘Child’ means a person who, if a male, has not completed twenty-one years of age, and if a female, has not completed eighteen years of age

The objective of this Act is to prevent child marriages. Section 3 of the Act makes the child marriage voidable at the option of the contracting party who was a child at the time of the marriage
The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015

‘Child’ means a person who has not completed eighteen years of age

The Act makes provisions for the welfare and development needs of the juveniles

Why are children on streets and railway platforms
Children flee or are driven away from their homes for a variety of reasons including violence, abuse, destitution or disregard

Many times children fantasize employment in urban areas and a more promising future than their current situation

There are an estimated 11 million street children in India. Most of them in an around railway stations

In the Indian metros of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, approximately 1,00,000 – 1,25,000 street children figure in the lists of missing, runaway, abandoned or trafficked children
