# Why Operating Statistics

They indicate total transport output as well as the efficiency of operation.
They help discover weak spots and help to take remedial measures in time.
Statistics enable supervision to be exercised by proxy.
Statistics, however comprehensive, will not in themselves run a railway but will supply the necessary data with the help of which the various problems which arise from day to day can be assessed and solved.

# Units of statistics

1- Primary units

expressed in terms of-

Quantity- e.g. No. of passenger, No. of Tonnes, Earnings
Distance- e.g. Kms.
Service - No. of engines, wagons, vehicles, trains
Duration – Hours and days

expressed in terms of –

Quantity-
Sale concept e.g. Pass. Kms., Tonne Kms.
Distance- Production concept e.g. Engine Kms., Wagon Kms.
Service - Cost concept e.g. Engine Hrs., Engine days, Wagon Hrs, Wagon days

# Units of statistics
3- Derivative units
A- Primary unit / Primary unit e.g.-
Earnings per passenger, Earnings per tonne
B- Primary unit / Fundamental unit e.g.-
Earnings per passenger per Km., Earnings per tonne Km.
C- Fundamental unit/ Primary unit e.g.-
Average lead of a commodity, Average distance travelled by each passenger
D- Fundamental unit / Fundamental unit e.g.-
Average net tonnes per train, Avg. net tonnes per wagon, Avg. no. of wagons per train

# Important Operating statistics
Coaching performance-
measured mainly in terms of Punctuality of passenger carrying trains.

Freight performance-
measured mainly in terms of speed of freight trains.
However, few more indices are taken into account while measuring operating performance.

<!-- Slide number: 7 -->
# Punctuality
Percentage of Punctual trains-

No. of trains not losing time (NLT) x 100
=	-------------------------------------------------------------------
	Total trains run

NLT trains include all trains terminating right time, whether recd. from another railway or starting on home line
						+
trains recd. late from another railway and terminating either as many minutes late as handed over, or less.

<!-- Slide number: 8 -->
# Vehicle Kilometres per Vehicles Day:
Coaching vehicle Km =	--------------------------- Coaching Vehicle day
Indicates the extent to which coaching vehicles are kept ‘on the move’. The main factors affecting its value are: (a) The average speed of trains (b) The average length of train run (average load) (c) The idle periods provided for in rake links.

# Shunting Kilometres per 100 Train Kilometres (Passenger including proportion of Mixed)
1- This figure indicates the amount of unproductive service that has to be performed per 100 train kilometers (Passenger including proportion of mixed). Since the amount of shunting to be done on a passenger train depends upon various local factors, the figure will vary from Division to Division and from Railway to Railway, traffic conditions remaining constant, is indicative of wasteful shunting.
 2. It can be depicted by formula given below:-
			Shunting Kms x 100
			 ----------------------------
				Train kms.

# Freight train performanceWagon usage-
Average starting wagon load-
1. Compiled separately for coal and coke, heavy merchandise and lightmerchandise, thus affording an indication of the extent to which wagon space is utilised by stations from which traffic originates. It is important that wagons be given as full a load as possible . Even a slight improvement in the starting wagon load can mean a tremendous saving to the Railway.
2. The result is ca
