FREIGHT OPERATIONS

OBJECTIVE OF FREIGHT
OPERATIONS
• OPTIMUM UTILIZATION OF
ASSETS –ROLLING AND FIXED TO
MAXIMIZE LOADING AT
MINIMUM UNIT COST

• What are rolling  and fixed assets of
railways?
• Whether loading alone can be the
criterion for productivity?

Fundamentals
• Goods and parcels both are freight business.
• When in railways talk of freight business we
are generally talking about goods traffic.
• Commercially more profitable business.
• Concept of aggregation
– Why do we want to run trains with more load?
– How can we ensure it?

Types of Goods Trains
• End to End
• Shunting trains / Pilots
• Departmental trains
– Rail carriers
– Ballast trains
– Sleeper trains

Freight Operation Characteristics
• Is complex and takes most of the time of the operating
officers.
• Demand fluctuates.
• Trains are not timetabled
• Various types of wagons.

Ordering of goods train
• Unique ID for a train.
• Train notice to yard /station from control that
the train is scheduled to leave the station at
certain time

LOAD AVAILABITY
• Full updated picture of loaded and empty
stock should be available.
– Now FOIS should be used but feeding has to be
frequent.
• Loading and unloading has be kept under
watch
• Timely placements and withdrawals from
loading /unloading points/sicklines.
• Fast shunting for formation of train.
• Timely fitness certificate.
– Repair on rake instead of detachment for sick line.

Locomotive Planning
• Power plan
– Daily average power availability
• Loco Outage and Loco utilisation
– Pre-departure detention and en-route detention
• Operating department to control loco running
– Allotment to a train

Loco controller objects if overdue schedule or schedule due
shortly
